I figure it’s time for my first update on how this herbal regimen is going. I don’t have a whole lot to report, being that this is my first month on it, but I can at least explain how I started everything and what I’ve noticed since.
I started out on just Vitex by itself, taking 1 pill (400mg) 3 times a day, per the bottle’s recommendation. It says to do that for 8-12 weeks, then pull back to just 1-2 per day. The first few days on Vitex brought a lot of burping for about 30 minutes following each dose. This was not my favorite. Vitex does not taste very good in burp form. But thankfully, this only lasted for a few days.
The next week, I started on Cinnamon. I decided to follow the bottle’s recommendation and do 2 pills (500 mg each) twice a day. Once again, I found myself burping cinnamon! Thankfully, I like cinnamon, so this was a lot less of a nuisance compared to the Vitex. It only lasted a few days, just like the Vitex.
Last weekend, I started Maca. I take 2 pills (500 mg each) twice a day. Once again, burping commenced. However, Maca actually has a bit of a sweet scent/taste, so it didn’t bother me. Like the others, the burping only lasted a few days.
Red Raspberry Leaf Tea
I only drink this periodically. I have some local honey I add to it for sweetener, plus I know it’s good for my allergies, so together they are lovely. The tea is pretty earthy, which I like, but I don’t think about drinking it as much. I’m a coffee lover to the core, so the mere thought of trying to replace my morning cup of love with tea just isn’t my idea of a good time.
I started everything officially on July 11 so it’s still pretty early, but I am noticing some significant changes in response to the Vitex. I can’t say for sure if the Cinnamon is doing anything because I have started back on my eating plan (high protein/controlled carbs/low sugar/clean/lots of veggies/low-sugar fruits), and that alone is just better for me in general, but we’ll see if I have any sudden drops in sugar. With the Vitex, I’ve had some headaches and some pretty intense hot flashes. It only took a few days for the hot flashes to start. I’m also breaking out big time… no, really. I hate it, but I can tell my body is trying to balance out. Earlier this week I was also experiencing cramping that was very similar to the first day of a period. It lasted for a few days and now has relaxed a bit. The hot flashes are pretty bad and they come on very suddenly, sometimes to the point where I have to stop whatever I am doing and stick my face in a vent, the freezer or a fan.
I understand that herbs like Vitex take time to really make a difference. My plan right now is to simply try to recharge… next cycle I will start temping/charting again to see if I ovulate on my own. It’s a long shot, but hey, crazier things have happened. I don’t have an appointment scheduled with my OB yet, but depending on how this next cycle goes, I might go see her in September.
I’m feeling impatient. Part of me wants to toss in the towel and let my OB pump me full of more Femara (or Clomid) and Metformin, plus a trigger shot. Who knows, maybe just doing the herbs for a little bit will help my body get a jump start enough to respond better to fertility treatment down the road. I really have no idea what I am doing. I just know that I want a baby so badly now, and some days are better than others, but ultimately this pit in my heart is getting deeper and deeper.
For now, I have the ultrasound bills from the failed rounds of treatment to pay off, then I can start with a clean slate. I just don’t know what to do. Every day I feel different about it.
How nice it would be to have a Christmas announcement.
